Resolved Question: What now for the "special relationship"?
I didn't vote for him, but congratulations to President-elect Obama. Have any of you Brits noticed he is not as enthusiastic about the "special relationship" as President Bush? How do you feel about that? After all, for the last eight years, your nation, supposedly our greatest ally, has shown some of the most vicious anti-Americanism ever seen. Survey after survey of British people showed that you believe your close relationship with the USA makes your country look weak; branding your former Prime Minister, Tony Blair, a "poodle" for his steadfast loyalty to the United States. As disgusted as many of you have been with the policies and actions of the Bush Administration, many American people, like myself, have been just as disgusted with the sheer amount of hatred and ill will your nation has shown us for the last eight years. Under Bush, you have looked more like fair-weather friends, than steadfast allies. Yes, you sent your troops in with ours, but your people protested every step of the way; the first protest you had was 14 September 2001; just three days after 9-11. Will you all be cheering and drinking champagne now that the dreaded "special relationship" is coming to an end? President Obama will treat you as just another European country, and no more "special" than the others. The majority of you seem elated that he was elected POTUS; but once the euphoria wears off, and reality sets in, surely you will go back to burning our nation's flag in the streets of London? moreResolved Question: Why do the Japanese consider putting soy sauce on rice to be barbaric?
Back home - virtually everyone that eats rice, puts soy sauce on their rice. All be it there are different loyalties to what kind of soy sauce it is that you're using. My favorite is the one brand that is made in the usa & doesn't include sugar in its creation. Unfortunately its made in Pearl City, Hawai'i & very difficult to get it exported ( I'm in California ).yeah by the way that brand is called "ALOHA" it is really the only one made in the united states of north america.Kb - sweetie thanks,... but I'm Sansei, i grew up mostly in Hawai'i. My dad is Nisei and served in the last great war when our relatives were interred because we were of Japanese ancestry... There are plenty of things to add to rice - as rice is the main dish. Among them Furikaki and other spiced garnishes. Its just that when ever we visited our relatives in Japan, they would give us a funny look when we did ad soy sauce to our rice ( I confess my dad never did do it in front of them, which is why he often grinned and not said anything ). One of my Aunts { in the old country - Japan } actually voiced her opinion & her hubby agreed that it was barbaric to put soy sauce directly on plain rice. While if its indrect, its okay,... like if you happen to have a bit of fish or other meat/vegetable in the rice dish. Yes - even in Hawai'i its still tradition for rice to have its own serving bowl "rice bowls". ; )Giggles,... I remember my mom pouring soy sauce in her bowl of Soba once - and my cousin's mom had a fit - got so flustered! My mom, brothers and myself try to not do it when we're over there visiting,... but you know old habits are hard to break. moreResolved Question: Do you drive an American made car ?
